US summer air travel in 2025 is facing significant setbacks due to a convergence of operational, regulatory, and economic challenges that are straining the aviation system. Ongoing air traffic control delays, widespread staffing shortages across airports and airlines, and the nationwide enforcement of TSA’s Real ID requirements are disrupting passenger experiences just as peak travel season begins. What is Changing with Southwest's Policies?
Southwest's checked bag policy
Individual: For reservations booked and ticketed and/or voluntarily changed (including name updates or changes to a ticket) on or after May 28, 2025, checked baggage fees will apply to Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus®, and Anytime fares. Business Select® fares will continue to receive two free checked bags.Groups: Customers with a valid Group Ticket that is ticketed on or before January 5, 2026, may check two (2) pieces of baggage without charge. United Airlines wants all domestic travelers checked in 45 minutes before departure
United Airlines will require all domestic passengers to be checked in for their flights 45 minutes before departure starting June 3. Previously passengers without checked bags were able to cut it a little closer, with check-in closing just 30 minutes before departure. "The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines," a United Airlines spokesperson told USA TODAY in a statement.
